I love biographies
I've been reading this book called "Pastor Hsi". It's about a Confucian scholar that was delivered from opium by giving his life to Christ. He was used of God to start opium refuges and many people came to Christ and were set free. It talks about how there was a great famine in China in the late 1800's. How people were stealing other people's children to cannibalize them (yikes). There were so many people that starved. Starving wolves would eat people, too, and there was a new Christian that had his 2 sons eaten alive by wolves (separate times within 6 months) but he just pressed into God all the more through it and saw it as an attack from the evil one. One of these new believers chose the name "demon overcomer". That's a good faith name! We are more than conquerors in Christ! It talks about how when the devil is openly worshipped both in his own name and under varying forms of idolatry, how there are manifestations of demon possession, revealing the true nature of the power behind the idols and revealing the difficulty of what the missionary has to deal with. Idolatry & demon-worship are closely connected. It says in the Bible, "What shall I say then?" "that the idol is anything, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils." 1 Cor. 10:19,20 (see also Ps 106: 36-38; Deut. 32:16:17). It gives many examples of the power of demons over the people and the power of God to set them free. It's again made me think of our experiences and those of missionaries in Asia and the need to pray for them.
